Study Guide for Digestion Quiz

You are responsible for all material covered in class in Chapter 8:

- describe the different organic molecules (carbs, proteins, lipids), what they are used for, and tests for each one.
- describe what an enzyme is and explain how pH, temperature, substrate concentration and competitive inhibitors affect enzyme activity.
- identify the major organs of digestion and describe the functions of each.
- describe the difference between physical and chemical digestion and provide examples of each.
- describe how carbs, proteins and lipids are physically and chemically digested in the body.
- describe the four parts of digestion (ingestion, digestion, absorption, egestion).
- describe causes, risk factors, treatments of major digestive disorders (peptic ulcers, anorexia, gallstones, cirrhosis, jaundice).
