Study guide for Classification/Ecosystems Quiz on Friday, March 20, 2009

You are expected to know the following for Friday's quiz.

- Taxonomy. How do we classify organisms? Who came up with this naming system? What are that seven taxa or levels of classification? What are the two names that we give to an organism?
- Phylogeny. What is a phylogenetic tree? What does it show?
- Kingdoms. What are the six kingdoms of life? What are the five factors that we can use to differentiate between them? Be familiar with general characteristics of each kingdom.
- Biomes. What are the four biomes that are found in Alberta? Be familiar with the general characteristics of each kingdom, be prepared to compare and contrast two biomes.
- Abiotic Factors affecting Terrestrial Ecosystems. What are these factors? What are the different layers of the forest? Soil?
- Aquatic Ecosystems. What are the different zones of a lake? What are the major features of each zone. How can you classify different bodies of water? What gas is necessary for life in aquatic ecosystems? What factors affect its ability to dissolve into bodies of water?
- Abiotic Factors affecting Aquatic Ecosystems. Be prepared to describe how changing seasons affect bodies of water (HINT: SPRING AND FALL OVERTURN) and the levels of a lake that are formed during the summertime.
